Hi! You can add a battery light to the closet and use a shoe rack to consolidate space.
I am looking and I see the option to put shelving around the bottom sides of the closet. You will then be able to walk in the closet to get items as you need. You will have more space saved with the use of the walls on the side. I am not sure if that can be seen. Here in the image is my option. This is on the back of my front door. My boots are lined behind the back of my bedroom door. out of sight of anyone buy me.
It depends on how many shoes you have. If you need more shoe storage there are awesome shelving units very cheap on the marketplace, Ikea and wayfair.com. With affirm.com anything is possible. I am not sure if anything I said was useful. I am only hoping. The lights can be stuck on the side walls of your closet. You push as you enter in and exit. I have seen the lights at the dollar tree. I am sure home depot would sure have them.
The shoe bag was free on Amazon with a game I play so I was not sad about the usage. which is possible on the closet door as well.
I remove my shoes as I enter and it's very tidy. Take care.
PICTURES speak louder than words so Here's my suggestions .........
I’m crazy about stacked show drawers. You can see everything inside them, they keep the dust off, and you can stack them on the floor or on shelves. As always, first weed out what you don’t need. Then store the rest in these: https://rstyle.me/n/c7snfbb63g7 For boots, I just leave a section on the side and stand them, but use inexpensive plastic show trees. https://rstyle.me/n/c7sngrb63g7
I have just posted my idea on a shoe rack using a wine rack.
You can put however many you want, by fixing them together. Add a top for shelving or in my case I wanted a stool so I padded the top. Holds six pairs of shoes singularly. Test shoes first, as both my husband and I have small feet, so small shoes required to fit.
Kay, You mentioned having a small closet so what would work well for you is something I did so click here- to see it. Basically I had an existing cut out in my wall that went into my basement but what YOU can do is cut into the wall and create shoe shelving like I have. Just add boards for shelves to put the shoes on! Then it's completely built in.
For lighting if you do not have an electrical outlet and don't want to put one in get battery powered lights. They have some great tap to turn on ones on Amazon!

Space Saving Shoe Storage
Try adding a closetmaid organizater. Do one high hang side and a double hang on the other side. Shelving on top for boots and use the shelves for shoes down the center. The shelf tower comes with the organizer. Don't forget to use pool noodles to keep your boots straight up. Cut noddles to fit each boot.
I posted a few weeks ago my Wine Box to a Special Shoe Storage on Hometalk. I converted one part of a winebox using different wood stains. The box holds six pairs of my shoes. Maybe it will appeal to you. Best wishes ☺️
You can use shoe boxes that stack, a shoe organizer that hangs on a wall or door, you can put shoes inside a decorated box or bag and add a cardboard divider like the kind that is used for wine bottles, etc. (you can see what I mean in my video with Hometalk here - https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/closets/closet-organization-and-hacks-37469282)
Closet Organization and Hacks
Try finding some old dresser drawers (tree lawn on garbage night :)) and put them under your bed. Great storage for just about anything.
Hello there,
1. You could cut the tops of of Milk containers and stick them together to make a stack as long and as wide and as tall as you like. Preferably fix by Glue or Nails etc. to a heavy base, then pop your shoes in the honeycomb or use for other storage..
2. Using an old wire coat hanger grip either side and bend in and up till it looks like bunny ears. Make another. Assemble by using another wire hanger - slip 2 Pulls from drinks cans over hook (one each side) attach bent hangers to the can pull. Hang hanger on rail and slip shoes over bunny ears. Then turn up ends of central hanger and use for another pair of shoes. They could also hold handbags or scarves or gloves etc. Have fun!
Hello Kay, I downsized from having a built in slanted tiered shoe display in my closet. Now Im a big fan of cubbies. I rotate summer shoes and winter shoes out seasonally. I store the off season in a zippered plaid shopping bag. Boots are in a tote under hanging clothing rod. Hope this helps.
I use an over the door plastic shoe pocket organizer for lighter/smaller shoes, and have 2 under the bed plastic organizer, great for freeing up the closet space. I also tucked a standard shoe rack in each back corner of the closet on the floor. I put battery operated tap lights in almost all of our closets.

Hello everyone, I hope you have been well inspired! For me, shoes are not part of my favorite sources of inspiration. But I took the opportunity to create a multi-function entrance furniture to hide them. Here is my first post of the challenge this week: a piece of furniture to hide his shoes, in upcycling version
Entrance Furniture, Storage for Shoes, Mirror, Console and Coat Rack.
Maybey 4x4cubby on left n right then 2 shelves at the back that run width of closet, that fit between 4x4cubbys n wall! Maybe in the cubby ports, get collapsible cloth boxes that u can pull out like drawers,
For lighting, run rope light along inside of closet around the door frame, but to plug it in, you'll need n extension cord to nearest outlet.. if u have n existing light, u can purchase n outlet adapter that screws into fixture.
Hello Kay, I don't know if I can explain my idea but I am going to give it a try. I would draw it but I can barely draw a stick figure. lol. Take fabric, say 24 inches by 12 inches. Add grommets to each corner. Hang a command hook or any kind of hook really the length apart that the grommets are. Put the first 2 grommets on the hooks, put the shoes or boots inside and hook the other 2 grommets. This way you will use up wall space and it will completely cover shoes with a pretty fabric to where you won't even be able to see them. It would be fairly inexpensive too. Would love to see what you end up doing. Good luck.

In the foyer...the picture is cut off, but this piece is about 5'x7'
I absolutely LOVE this from Ikea and add a tape LED light while you are at it. The cabinet only about 8" deep!
Kay, another one of our DIY'ers created a tension rod shoe rack that's real inexpensive to do. You can watch her video here...

Tension Rod Shoe Storage
I like the idea from Kay right above but would use two tension rods so that I could lay a nice thin piece of wood across. You can paint it white or stain it so it would look better. Definitely would provide more stability to the shoes.

What we just did, was go through the shoes first to see what didn’t fit.
The we took winter and summer shoes and divided them.
We simply don’t have enough space for all the shoes.
Winter shoes went into a sealed bucket in the basement.
Summer shoes are out on shelves in the closet.
Dress shoes since they are not used often go in each persons closet to keep them nice.
If you do not have your closet filled with hanging clothes, you could take skirt hangers and hang boots from them. Purchase the type that connect together, this way you can hang several boots saving the width space in your closet. I would us something to insert inside of boot to save shape, tissue paper/cut pool noodle, etc., prior to hanging boot. They also make shoe trees that hold a lot of shoes straight up if you have room in your closet for them. I put mine in laundry room and use small bookshelf in closet. You can get one shelf, two, etc. depends on what fits. I recommend LED lighting with batteries if you do not have electrical outlet for plug. If you do have outlet for plug, Habitat Restore has reall cheat $3.99 LED Strip Lights you can install. Very easy to install. Just make sure plug is long enough or you will need an extension cord (they have those cheap as well). There are so many options, good luck. I am sure someone’s idea will help you out.
First off clear out shoes that you haven’t worn in over a year. Then you can reconfigure your shoes. 💲🌲 has very nice styles of shoe boxes. You can also buy in bulk. Or get canisters for winter/ summer shoes.
Have you tried over the door shoe bags and I also use under bed storage on wheels for shoes
I noticed at our pastors home they used a smaller book shelf in the hall to store their shoes they use more. We use a large basket.
Hi Kay, I too had a small closet but did have a lot of height that was just wasted spaced. I ran down to ikea and purchased a few inexpensive coat hooks. I am able to put seasonal shoes up top that my husband and I do not use as often. Here a picture for you to see.
I think I answered this on another site, sorry if I'm repeating myself. I also have a small closet so i use a Walmart shoe cubbies that hang from your closet rod. There very spacious and study cubbie square. I hope you find what your looking for.🙂
Use the back of the door. They make shoe storage just for this spot.
