Last summer I discovered this amazing chair frame at an estate auction. I loved the detailed carving and the size, as it was a little larger than most chairs. So many times people overlook these gems because it may need a little polishing or TLC. But I tend to see the beauty underneath and am always more than willing to put in a little effort to reap the reward.
Here is the chair; notice the original horsehair arms. I did remove these but it really tells the age of the chair.
After a good wiping down, I added jute webbing, and a couple of coats of chalk paint, and sealed with polycrylic.
I added a dark brown glaze and sealed again with polycrylic before added the back fabric (contrast) and the seat cushion. I shaped the cushion with a simple white fabric before adding the fabric.
Here is a photo of the back (contrast) fabric.
Here is a photo after the back cushion and fabric is put into place. All is left is the trim work.
I opted to try a double welt trim to finish out the piece. I had never attempted the double-welt but I am happy with the way it turned out.
Just look at that amazing carved wood. The glazing just makes it pop.
More detail of the glazing and double-welting.
And here she is in her new home!
