Nautical Themed Coffee Table Makeover

A friend invited me to her yard sale before she moved and I couldn't resist buying a coffee table covered in black spray paint. This 70's piece was heavily distressed but I knew with some TLC I could make it over. My friends challenge each other to a monthly themed furniture makeover and this coffee table was my candidate for this month's travel theme.
The table was painted with duck egg blue chalk paint after sanding it to bare wood. The boat and rope give it a fun nautical look.
Under the black spray paint was a thick coat of 1970's varnish.
The top was intentionally distressed, so I sanded it as smooth as I could get it. Many of the knots were added on purpose. If you are a child of the 70's like me, you remember that unfortunate look.
I enlarged a boat image with an opaque projector and transferred it to the coffee table top with carbon paper.
