Two Tone Painted Washstand Makeover

I'm not sure why, but I can't pass up a washstand when I see it. They're always inexpensive and I love the scale. Smaller furniture means that it's faster to paint. I also love the idea of rescuing something that is overlooked.

This washstand received a retro two tone look in yellow and white. It was a harder piece to sell, but I thought it turned out so cute.

This piece started with a lovely faux finish. I seem to have a knack for finding furniture with this particular finish (my 3rd one!)

With furniture, I always do the following steps:

  • Clean thoroughly with vinegar water or simple green for really dirty pieces. Wash the soap off!
  • Sand lightly
  • Prime if necessary

Proper prep is crucial to a good paint job.

I painstakingly stripped the top only to discover that it wasn't in staining condition. So everything got primed to make the paint stick better. (The top was primed too - it just took a while for me to give up on it.)

The body of the piece received 2 coats of Country Chic paint in Bees Knees (a pale yellow).

Country Chic paint is so lovely to use. It goes on like a chalk paint and they have amazing colors.

The drawers were painted in Country Chic simplicity (a pure white.)

The inset parts on the door were also painted in simplicity. I used an angled brush to cut in. You can also tape it if you're not good at cutting in.

Everything received 2 coats of polycrylic once the paint was dry. Polycrylic is waterbased and will not yellow over light colors. It also works nicely in humid weather.

And here's how it turned out. Such a sweet look!
