No-Sew Chicken Curtains for Hen House Nesting Boxes
All backyard chickens like privacy and many people sew cute little curtains to cover the nesting boxes. I previously had sewn some but chickens being chickens they got knocked down and dirty and I tossed them. Then they started laying eggs in hidden corners so I knew I needed to give them curtains again. Not wanting to actually get the sewing machine out I decided to take the easy no-sew way out.
I chose chicken pattern fabric- one yard was plenty for my 3 hen house nesting boxes.
I had some iron on hemming tape already but you'll also need an iron and pinking shears or regular scissors.
If you choose your material wisely it won't unravel if you don't hem all edges. Otherwise you will need to use the pinking shears or hemming tape for the sides and bottoms. I didn't and it's held up great!
Lay the fabric front side down, fold over and iron a deep crease. I then laid the hemming tape near the raw edge of the fabric leaving a generous opening for the curtain rod. Run the iron along the fabric so the hemming tape melts to the fabric.
If you want to go fancy with a ruffle at the top iron in two rows of the hemming tape.
Run the curtain rod through the opening, attach the curtain rod hardware, then hang the rod to the wall.
Then I cut the bottom of the fabric short so the chickens can peek in to see if it's occupado, lol. They like to peek out as well.
I also cut vertical slits near each nesting box edge to make it easier to move the curtain aside for each box. I've had this up since summer 2019 and the chickens and I are happy with it and it has held up well.
