When I constructed my pergola from a kit I was a little leery about drilling into my concrete patio slab as it was only 3 inches deep. Instead I put pavers down stacked cinder blocks and then inserted the post inside of the cinder blocks I capped off the open-end to make a little plant shelf and then started to turn the ugly cinder blocks into something that looked like it should be supporting a pergola. I skim coated the cinder blocks with fast set mortar used a small wooden dowel, actually I use the handle of a wooden spoon, made mortar joints and then painted it with a mixture of reds Brown's greys and whites. I sealed it all up with Thompson's masonary seal and there you have it.

Plain old cinder blocks
