Hi! No matter what brand you use, prep is the key. Most brands tell you "no prep", but if you want a nice finished product that holds up, clean it carefully- I use what I have to clean anything. I took a class once from a professional who used any spray household cleaner and water to scrub a piece before stripping it. I like to use Krudkutter but, have used anything I would clean a kitchen counter with. It is amazing how grubby some surfaces are, and how much buildup is present on most wood. After it's rinsed and dry, I use stripper to remove most of the old finish and then sand. If I am going to paint, and I just want a smooth surface to work on, I will sand the old finish and then seal it with Kilz. Wood and old stain tends to "bleed" through paint in unpredictable ways. Then seal with a water based clear sealer or wax. I prefer sealer, but, that's me. Don't be disappointed if the first coat of chalk paint looks blotchy. It will look better with each coat. The level of gloss you achieve is determined by the sealer you use since chalk paint is matte. Good luck!
Chalk Paint Recipe
Calcium Carbonate Powder- The smoothest finish
supplies needed:
· Mixing bowl
· Spoon
· 2 Tablespoons Calcium Carbonate Powder
· 1 Tablespoon of warm water
· 1 cup latex paint
1. In a mixing bowl, mix together calcium carbonate powder and warm water. Stir well to create a smooth pancake like batter consistency. If too thick, add a little more water and stir well.
2. Make sure all the powder is dissolved in the water.
3. Pour the mix into a cup of latex paint and stir very well.
To Make a Quart of DIY Chalk Paint Using Calcium Carbonate Powder
· Mix 8 tablespoons of Calcium Carbonate Powder and 4 tablespoons of water. Stir well to make sure powder is dissolved. Pour into a quart of paint and mix well.
You can use any formula of paint when using Calcium Carbonate Powder by itself. I like Behr and Glidden since they are affordable brands, but you can use any brand or formula of latex paint.
Where to Buy Calcium Carbonate Powder to Make Chalk Paint?
· You can buy Calcium Carbonate Powder at your local health food store, or on Amazon. Some readers have bought it in bulk online and farm supply or at beer and wine making supply stores.
Hello Dorie,
You can paint over timber furniture without preparation, but do seal it with a wax for protection, or you could use a polyurethane CLEAR varnish............Enjoy!
