I love letterboards, but I also love "inexpensive", "rustic", and "unique". So I decided to create my own version!

Get Your Magnets

I found these large letters at Walmart in the stationary section for less than $5. You may wish to purchase two sets so you have plenty of extra letters. They also had a smaller letter size. So far, I have not been able to locate these online, but they are in the store.

Find Your "Board"

I have a variety of metal "boards" that work well for this. All you need is a flat surface that is magnetic. Those pictured above are trays that were once in the bottom of large bird cages; I got them at a yardsale.

Play With Your Letters

Here are the letters on a tray that I got at our local antique store.

Try Different Surfaces

Here they are on a smaller metal tray that I got from Decor Steals.

Old Baking Sheets Work, Too!

Here is where I often display my board, in our kitchen. This time I used an antique baking sheet. (FYI - newer baking sheets aren't always magnetic.)

Have Fun!

Here is one of my favorites. I like to change the letters out from time to time. You could also use vintage enamel trays, which are usually white or off white - I think those would look great! If you decide to try this out, please share a photo. I'd love to see what you come up with! And for more DIY home and inspo, please do follow me on Instagram @jagcagdesign. The one is white was it painted and if so what type paint ? I’m doing a Rock and roll pool table room and would like to make a magnetic board of some size in there I also have lots of magnetic pictures and frames etc so I could definitely use this idea but because I’m not doing vintage I don’t like the metal or white wash look but if I could change the color I believe I could use this idea 🤯 please share about what it takes to apply color or paint and keep magnetic value ?

Love your letter board, but I also love the brackets you used for the shelves. Can you please tell me what they are made from?

Really cute and your kitchen is absolutely beautiful! Did you do the wall and ceiling yourself or have a contractor do it. I love how you have it decorated... one of the best I’ve seen! The fixture hanging over the sink is awesome, is it new or did you make that? Everything is so cute!

Wow, thank you so much! We did all of the work ourselves. We moved into this home after losing our previous home to wildfire. All of the wood that you see was milled from the burned trees on our property, with the exception of the ceiling, which was already there (we whitewashed it to match). The light fixture is an old trough. We ordered it off Etsy but then added the pulleys and the big chain so it would have more of a statement - got those at a yardsale. Thanks so much for your sweet comments! Made my day. - Jamey
