Hi Char. I live next to woods and 2 blocks from the DuPage River. So we see a lot of wildlife. The animals were treating my vegetable garden like a buffet. The only thing that worked for me was using shredded bars of Irish Spring soap. You can shred them on a box grater or even in a food processor. I buy the 12-bar pack of soap and shred it all at one time. I store it in a 5-gallon bucket with lid out in my shed. As soon as I plant everything, I spread out the shredded soap around each plant and around the perimeter of my garden. I still see a few bites on some of my plants, but much less than it used to be. I'm sure the soap will keep the deer out of your Hostas too. Good luck Char.
we use a spray every other night called liquid fence. Works great...beware it stinks.
Fence
I've read many times that deer do not like the sccent o mint and many people have shredded the bar soap "Irish Spring" and added to their gardens to keep the deer away. It has to be replaced every so often because of rain and the leements, but worth a try!

Pee on them. Human urine scares deer off.
