DIY Concrete Bowls

Concrete pottery is expensive to buy but so cheap to make! I had leftover concrete from setting our deck posts so I decided to try my hand at making some bowls.

Buy Nesting Bowls

I couldnt find round ones unfortunately but Walmart had these for $5. You’ll need these for your molds.

Mix the concrete

It took me a few tries to get it the right consistency. You want it kind of thick like frosting. Only add a little water at a time!

Dont forget to grease your bowls!

The insides and outsides need to be greased. I used vegetable oil. This helps it pop out of the molds once dry.

Fill the molds

Fill each “outside” mold about halfway

Then add your “inside” mold. I used rocks to weigh it down. Otherwise it kind of sits on the surface of the concrete. Make sure you dont push too far down because you still want your bowls to have a bottom.

I had extra concrete so I used my mixing bowls but I dont recommend this because it cracked my tuppoware. You need something with more “flex” as your molds.

Get out the air bubbles

I used my sander to vibrate out the air bubbles but Ive also seen people just tap and shake the molds a bit.

Wait 48 hours

After 48 hours you can pop them out of your molds!

I added holes to mine with a masonry bit to use as planters.

Sand down any imperfections

I've heard it's easier to remove the molds before the concrete cures and dries completely, say after about 24 hours. Was it difficult to remove the molds after 48 hours?

The picture with you chanting "Please don't brake" Did any of them brake, I just had a thought, maybe cut some plastic straws and stick them in-between the bowls to form the holes.

I normally run away from any project that uses concrete--hate messing with it!! But I think I will have to try this--too cute! Thank you so much for sharing!!
