You will need some type of protection or it will rust. Might be cheaper to buy a new tank than having re-galvanized.

Yes, otherwise it is going to rust pretty quickly and become dangerous!
Hi Jolene, a rustoleum based paint might work fine on the outside of the tank.
I have personally responded to this question three times.. not sure if you are getting our responses or not.
I would seal it with a marine quality sealer or paint. I'm assuming the inside wasn't painted. Good luck and stay safe!
You can use marine varnish.
Yes I agree marine varnish!! Go to a marine store, not just a hardware store for it! You want heavy duty!
