Hi! I like your idea! Here's a project that if you scroll through it, you will find something similar to your idea:

I have seen shelving attached to cabinet where there is a space between them but never have seen it instead of a backsplash. It will keep things off of the counter, but also cut down on the depth of the counter to use. The area of the backsplash will still show thru, but painted it would look okay.
I had a friend who did it. She put wood behind them and it looked great.
Yes! I love this look and they'd be fun to decorate or to place items on that you use often. I see this a lot with the farmhouse style kitchens.
Hi Peggy, I've seen this DIY a lot lately, they don't just add an open shelf but first raise their upper cabinets up to the ceiling for even more storage: https://thecrazycraftlady.com/raising-kitchen-cabinets/
I think it's a great look. You can line up containers for storage on the shelves

Maybe narrow ones would work well and not interfere with countertop useage. Narrow ones could house spices and small decorative items.
Here's some ideas here that look nice. I like the idea of open cabinets and a shelf underneath them, could be for shorter items that take up space in regular cupboards.

Hello. That would seem to we a wise use of commonly wasted space. How it looks may depend on what you store on the shelves.
I think that could be a great idea - especially to hold shorter items like tea cups or small plates or spices.
Hello Peggy,
Yes, They can be very useful for things like cups, mugs or spices etc.
If they are small it might work, but if they hang down too low, it may impede your available countertop space.
Yes, you could do it for extra storage
