I'm a huge fan of Mackenzie Childs whimsical style, especially the signature check. However, if I bought every piece I adore I'd be in big trouble! So what do Makers do? We DIY!

Step 1

Decorate plain ceramic pumpkins with paint pens. I found mine at Target for $1 each. Can't beat that! The paint pens, I had at home.

Step 2

Follow the grooves in the pumpkin with your paint pen. One reason I love the Mackenzie Childs style is it's not "perfect" so if there are imperfections, all the better!

Step 3

Go horizontally around the pumpkin to create your grid. Place a pencil dot in the squares to be filled in so you don't mess up your pattern!

Step 4

Fill in your squares until complete.

Step 5

Once your squares are all filled in, go back down the grooves with a gold paint pen and also go around the base of the stem and paint the stem. You can see where my gold paint pen bled a little leaving a dot, and I just went back over that spot with the black.

Step 6

For the striped pumpkin, I used acrylic paints to fill in but it's the same concept. Line the grooves with the paint pen, fill in the sections with a couple of coats of paint, then go down the sides of each filled in section with antique gold paint.
