Are they painted or stained now? A good sanding and a fresh coat of paint or stain is an affordable way.
Sand then down to make a new coat of paint adhere better. If you do multiple coats, let the first dry and then lightly sand and paint.
It's going to depend on if they're indoor or outdoor. Outdoor you can paint or repaint or re-stain. Indoors, you might try using the search bar at the top left to look at other people's projects as the options are pretty lengthy.
You can paint them

After prepping them correctly, paint them. To add some interest, stencil a design on the risers.
Hi! Use a good quality porch and floor paint after a good prep.
Hello. A good paint job after proper prep can make old boards look wonderful.
Clean and use a wood restorer product like Howard’s.
Hi there Debbie, sometimes all that's needed to make old wooden floors look new again is a beautiful wooden stain. This video will give you more information - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRf_emDug1c
Hello Debbie,
If outside, use a wood stain preserver from the Section for Fencing. If inside, use a coloured Varnish or a Stain then a Clear varnish, or a Coloured Wax. Best wishes.
Take a scrub brush with dish soap in a bucket of water and. Scrub them good and clean them then hose off that will freshen them up then maybe stain them or Thompson’s water seal them so they stay clean
Hi Debbie. Start by power washing the steps to remove old paint chipping and all dirt. Allow them to dry 24 hrs. Then you can paint or stain them the color of your choice. If you don't have access to a power washer, you can rent one from Home Depot or Lowe's for $28. A gallon of paint and paint supplies will run around $20. So you can make your wooden steps look new again for under $50. I hope you find this information useful. Good luck Debbie..
You can sand them down and retreat them with stain.
You can repaint them and add a new runner.
