Hello Shirley,
U
You could try using Lime Wax on it. You might want to sand it down first!
Hi Shiley, are you ok with painting the furniture or are you looking for something to lighten it up without using paint?
You'll have to sand off the old stain in order to go lighter, unfortunately. If the furniture is antique, you might get a valuation on it first in case it's worth something. Altering it would likely ruin the value.
Very often antique furniture is very dark from the varnish and years of polishing it. If you strip off the finish you may find the actual wood is much lighter.
Hi Shiley, stripping the old varnish and years off of the piece with a paint stripper will likely lighten it up considerably. If that's not enough you could then sand the piece down and stain it with a white wood stain.

Sanding takes foreEVER!. If you still want it in stain that is your only choice. If you want is a great pop of color chalk paint is the way. The only time you really need to sand the gloss down is if it is a high shine. Otherwise, clean well with a degreaser detergent and rinse well. Let dry and two coats of chalk paint. It dries very fast and you will be amazed at the transformation. If you want the antique look hit the corners and around handles with sandpaper to scuff off little areas. Don't like the area add more chalk paint. Or use a TINY bit of antiquing wax around the handle where fingers would touch and edges. It goes a LONG way with a tiny bit. You can always add more but harder to take off too much. Go for it.
You will have to strip it to the bone and re stain in, if its a cherry wood it wont be light.
You can clean it up and paint it, then add a glaze if you want it a bit darker or with some color variation. In order to stain it a lighter color, you would have to sand it back to the natural wood color before you can add a lighter stain.
