After a thorough cleaning Patty you might want to consider repainting and/ or resealing your ceilings, that should help seal up the cracks etc. For the biggest cracks you could consider using a clear caulk.
Hi there. I agree, that you could clean the attic floor and then seal the cracks. You could also put plywood boards or a flooring underlayment sheet down in the attic, on the floor, to prevent anything from falling through.
I assume you have cracks in the ceiling so you would need to repair those and repaint the ceiling and clean up the dust in the attic - that should help you out
You could just add wood battens they would cover the edges where the wood meets and forms a seam.
I guess you have no drywall underneath your wood ceiling? So you would need to tackle this from your attic, you could lay insulation batts down and staple the edges to the rafters to keep in place. You could line the spaces between the rafters with cardboard or get a roll of the heavy duty rosin paper cut to slightly wider than rafter space so you can staple in place to the rafter sides. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Trimaco-27-6-in-x-140-ft-Non-Adhesive-Masking-Paper/1001333788
This needs to be tackled from the ceiling. Plywood would do the trick!
Hello Patty,
Either Board over your Loft floor and or Board over the Sitting room Ceiling.
We sort of had the same problem in our log cabin great room, resealing the cedar log walls and ceiling certainly helps eliminate that.
Sounds like you may need to reseal your ceiling.

How do you seal wood ceilings to prevent dust from coming through?
You need to seal it from the attic side. I would use reflectix as it will also insulate but you could use plastic.
I wood seal the seams in the ceiling with clear caulk.
For a rustic seal for the ceiling, you could soak the right sized strips of rope in linseed oil and put them in the cracks a screwdriver of a putty knife would work. I saw this done to a hardwood floor and it looked spectacular.
But ,I agree, fix the dust at the source above the ceiling by the best and most doable method for you.
Is there not any kind of plywood as an attic floor? If not, you might add that which will also help maintain temperatures in your living space.
We insulated our attic and that help with dust
Hi! Like the others, I think you need, probably a sealed subfloor. That will give you a better surface to walk on, too. Stay safe!
Hi Patty, check this out, it will hopefully help you out,

What's the best way to seal a wood ceiling?
Sounds like the ceiling boards have shrunk over time. May be time to re do the ceiling. Trying to seal up all the spots where dust is coming down seems like more work then re doing it. and you may have the opportunity to do it the way you like... Good Luck
