DIY Velvet Mirror
Looking for ideas to use up that velvet leftover from past projects? This DIY Velvet Mirror should be right up your alley! I had some velvet remaining after I finished up my Office Chair Makeover (check it out if you have an old desk chair due for a facelift).
All you’ll need is a 20 by 20″ (50 x 50cm) scrap of velvet in any color and some repurposed cardboard!
To start off, cut a ring into the cardboard. The inner circle should be the size of your mirror. Mine was 8″ (20cm) so I started with that dimension and drew a larger 16″ (40cm) circle around it.
Next, lay down your velvet fabric with its back side up. Place your base ring on top of it and cut into the velvet leaving 2 or 3 inches (5 to 7cm) around the ring. Cut tabs into the velvet, both around the ring and the inner part. This will make it easier to achieve a smooth finish when pulling the fabric around the curve of the base.
After you’re done, put the fabric aside and lay down the batting. Cut a circle that is slightly smaller than the cardboard base.
On another piece of batting, cut a ring 1.5″ (4cm) larger than the cardboard base. Like you did with the velvet fabric, cut some tabs into the inner and outer rings of the batting to make it easier to pull it close to the curved edge.
So we have the fabric and padding ready, let’s make a mirror! To begin, place the cardboard ring down and heat up the glue gun. Take the smaller batting ring and place it on top of the cardboard base. Lift up the batting and apply hot glue underneath. Press it down and continue to glue around the ring until it’s fully attached to the base.
Then, turn the cardboard base over (padding facing down) and place it on top of the large batting ring. Using your glue gun, lift the tabs one by one and glue them on the base, pulling a little to make sure it’s slightly stretched.
Now that the padding is done, lay the velvet fabric on the table with its back facing up. Place the base on top of the velvet with the padding facing down. Like with the batting, grab a tab and apply a line of hot glue. Pull a little and glue it onto the cardboard base. Check out the other side every now and then to see if the fabric is stretched properly.
To finish, place the mirror on top of the base and press it down. It will already stay put because it’s squeezed in the padding. Apply some glue at the back and attach a picture hanger.
That’s all, hang your DIY Velvet Mirror above your vanity or lean it against the wall on top of the dresser!
