You need a drill bit designed for the tile you have. Most is ceramic. Then place a piece of painters tape over the area to help prevent splintering. Apply slight pressure as you drill.
You will need a carbide-tipped or diamond-tipped drill bit. And I agree with Kathy, use painter's tape.
Yep I think the first two commenters before me pretty much covered it. A diamond bit on a drill. Make sure and use painters tape where you're making your holes and go VERY slow.
A carbide drill bit is the best way. But I have used a regular high speed drill bit. Ceramic tile is fired so only the surface is rock hard. I have used a center punch or a 16 penny nail with a hammer to chip the surface. Then use a regular drill bit to drill through.
You will need a special bit for a drill for tile
Before you drill though it you need to make sure there are no wires behind it ~ here are some ideas to help you out

You will need a hammer drill and masonry bit.. But first, put masking tape over area. Do you layout where you want the hole on the tape. Drill through the tape... The tape will help to stop the tile from chipping.. Good luck
Hi Beth, you can do this easily with a masonry bit, hope these help you out,
