How can I get rid of a popcorn ceiling??
I have a popcorn ceiling that is starting to crack. It would be a mess to remove it but it looks like it would come down fairly easily. But then what do I have to do to the celling beneath the popcorn?

Want to hide fan wire in concrete ceiling and attach it behind shitrock to electric outlet. Any tips on how to remove a popcorn ceiling?
Hi Zibby, it really depends on what shape the ceiling is in once you complete scraping them. When I did it I found it hard not to also take off some of the taping and mud beneath the popcorn so I ended up having to re-mud and sand a lot of the tape lines. Here's some more info. Its not a fun job but totally doable - good luck!

Hello Aibby, removing popcorn ceiling materials is a MESSY job but can be done fairly quickly. I've done more than I want to remember!
Be sure to remove or cover everything, including yourself. You should wear eye protection at the very least. Here's a link that gives you step by step instructions. There's no way to know what the surface will look like when finished. It may require some type of texturing or patching to make it look nice afterwards. And hopefully your popcorn ceiling has not been painted at some point in the past as that will make it a bit more difficult to remove. Do just small sections at a time (3'x3') as it is labor intensive and your arms will be SO tired! Good luck!

Keep in mind that removing popcorn ceilings requires a certain degree of physical agility and flexibility, especially in the neck and shoulders. It can be done, but as it is important to remove every speck before painting, the job is not as easy at it would first seem.

Hi! One other factor is that years ago there was asbestos in some ceilings. The stuff is dangerous while it is being removed and fibers remain in the air and on surfaces if not properly remediated. A simple test kit is all you need. They are available online and anywhere with construction supplies. Hopefully that isn't the case, but, better safe than sorry. Good luck!
