How To Tear Down A Box Spring For Reuse / Box Spring String Lights

2 Materials
2 Days

I didn’t intend to start this project. I am in the middle of so many others, but I am afflicted or gifted, depending on how you look at it, with trasho-distracto-imagination-disorder.

In short, that means that sometimes I find trash too distracting to throw away because I imagine there is something amazing I can do with it. So recently when I was clearing out our spare bedroom rather than hauling our ancient mattress and box springs to the curb like any normal person, I decided to spend several back-breaking hours dismembering the parts instead.

What do I have to show for my effort besides scraped hands and an aching back? Well, I have 3 boxes of bedsprings, 9 salvaged pieces of wood, more wood scraps suitable for firewood, some long pieces of spring, a large rectangular metal frame 2 bags of trash, and the satisfaction of knowing that I kept most of the box spring from ending up in the landfill.

Oh and I also have this silly little addition to our patio lights.

It is a pretty simple project once step number 1 is completed

Step 1 – Disassemble box springs.

Step 2 – Attach two pieces of wire to bed springs

Step 3 – Hang springs over bulbs and secure with wire

If you would like to see the deconstruction of the box springs you can check it out in the video below. Do you have any ideas for how to use the other kazillion bed springs. I would love to hear them.

And if you are wondering about the mattress. Well, I can’t keep it from the landfill forever but for now, we have given it to the dogs.

Honestly I thought they would be more appreciative little hairy ingrates.

P.S. This year I am really trying to have a pretty yard so I have been working on a few other garden projects if you missed them you can check them out below.

Thanks for stopping by.

Could you bead them or add lights for outdoor holiday ornaments? Or attach a flat plate or wood disk for a candle holder or decorative serving platter? Perhaps and outdoor bottle or glass holder? Perhaps an over piece for a vase?
