Fire Pit With Laser-cut Flame Screen
Last summer we used an old fire pit for outdoor fun. It was small, and we could not grill anything, but it was nice to sit by the fire and chat with friends.
Some time in March I saw this amazing piece of metal laser-cut art on Craigslist sold for $5 bucks, and thought... Wow, it would make a great sparks and flames screen for a fire pit! Of course I bought and brought it home.
My idea was to make a big fire pit with a concrete top. I needed a strong and sturdy metal frame that would be able to support the weight of the concrete top. Lucky me, on Craigslist I found a set of wrought iron coffee and side tables. The table design and color was a good match for what I wanted to make. The coffee table frame would actually become a fire pit.
I wanted to make sure the firepit could be taken apart and moved to a new spot, if needed. So the concrete top was to have 3 parts, the middle part with the fire tray, and two side parts.
I made a mold with pieces of wood and used Type N mortar to pour concrete into the molds. I filled the mold .5 inch deep, and laid chicken wire and several rebars to reinforce the mortar (2 bars for each part). Then I added another .5 inch layer of mortar.
This is the middle part with the fire tray. The surface looked rough and uneven, but I was going to pour another layer of concrete and make it smooth.
The 3 parts of the concrete top are ready for finishing touches, to be cleaned and sanded.
Remember, the side table that I bought as part of the set? I removed the legs and set the top frame on the concrete top. I think it looks like it belongs here.
I made a stand that would hold the laser-cut metal piece and used lava rocks as accents.
Here is my fire pit. It turned out to be very pretty
