Hi there! What kind of patio are you looking to build? We just put in a "patio" using 4x4 posts as a frame and filled it with pea gravel. Very easy and very inexpensive and we love it! Consider your grade, water run off in the area, drainage requirements, how much you will need to do to make the area level, and the type of material you want to make it from. Do lots of homework on the material, especially if you want to have a long life patio vs. quick build for a sale.

Ground level or elevated. Elevated will take some carpentry skills. Ground level can be done with paving stones or a concrete pad.

It depends on what type of patio, where it's being built, what materials you'd like to use and whether or not you need permits, etc. from your local building department. Start with the building department and then research what type of patio you're looking to create.
