We're not talking infestation here, but we seem to have up to 20 persistent fruit flies in the kitchen - regardless of the presence of fruit! Can't figure out where they're coming from! How do we get rid of them? Quick - before we start naming them!

New Era Pest Control on Jun 15, 2014First place to look is drains. Place a cup, (upside down) over ALL drains in the house, overnight. As you inspect those cups and are turning them over, notice if you see these pests coming out. If they are, then simply treat the drains with a bio product to kill the fungus. Bleach and drain cleaner will not suffice. Look for all rotted fruit, plants, flowers, old flower water, even baby diaper containers contain some sort of rotting vegetation housing these pests. Many times, the garbage cans outside are the culprit. If you store your garbage cans in the garage; yes the hot, humid, shady garage, then your chances of fruit fly/phorid fly infestations are far greater. These flies thrive in rotting vegetation. Garbage cans with the right combination of foods will eventually decompose, promoting fruit/phorid fly growth. As you open and close the garage door, these suckers are sneaking into the cooler environment. Also garbage cans left on the sides of the house, under shady, moist areas will promote this growth. If at all possible, keeping the cans empty and in the sun discourages future growth and reduces the number of these pests greatly

Lisa House on Feb 24, 2016If you use potting soil you should sterilize by heating in the oven, also should do this to any pot/soil you will be reusing.
