80's bedside table update.
I don't have a before - forgot to take one. The finish was orangey oak with a glossy finish. Early American hardware. I stripped the finish and sanded with 220 grit after removing the drawers and hardware. I also removed the ornate skirting and refashioned with an edge piece at the base. There was these ornate pillars on each side of the drawers that I pried off. I used small bun feet that I found at Lowes.
I then used 3 different stains to get the Mexican rustic finish I wanted - special oak, weathered oak and pickled oak. You have to play with the amount and leave on times to achieve the shading. I found rustic hardware online by googling "Mexican rustic drawer pulls."
Because the sides were veneer, I decided to paint as they were in rough shape and didn't match the stain I was going for... so I applied a coat of Gripper primer, and then two coats of a latex shade of paint from Lowes. They sell paint samples so I had them color a small sample the carmel shade I wanted.
Then I added a color wash of an almost black to tone down the color a bit. I dry brushed the same color to the drawer fronts to help pull the piece together.
Finished piece. I still have the other table to do. I think this updated nicely and my sister doesn't have to yard sale and look for pieces that match her Mexican rustic decor.
