I made this box as a Valentine's Day gift for my wife. It all started with a piece of wood that I discovered a few months ago when I re-sawed a piece of walnut. When I bookmatched the pieces, it resembled the face of an owl. It was destined to be a really nice top for a jewelry box.
The sides of the box are made from bird's eye maple that is highly figured. I used box joints for the sides, with the corners rounded over to soften the look. The top and bottom are made from a thin (1/4") piece of walnut. The interior jewelry trays are also made from bird's eye maple, but it is less figured than the pieces used for the sides of the box.

This is a view of the interior. There are two levels of trays to hold the jewelry. One tray occupies the entire level; the other level has two trays that each occupy half of the level.
