I posted an industrial wall shelf a while back. Needless to say, we are really into the industrial look, and so I created this pipe shelf for our living room. It is all piping, no wood involved. We had a really awkward blank wall space next to our TV and under a small window, and it took me a while to finally come across this idea to fill it.
I had seen this type of shelf online before, which served as my inspiration. I found one I really liked on the home depot blog. I followed their schematic (below). I also drew out my own schematic on paper, since some of my measurements were different. I carefully made a list of all of the parts I needed. I had to label flanges, elbows, tees, nipples and couplings. The couplings are put in just to add to the look.
First, I built the whole shelf on the floor. But I did not install it all put together. I built it first just to make sure it was even and I had all the parts I needed. In order to hang it, I had to take it a part in large pieces and then reconnect the parts as I went building it.
This is the blank wall space before I hung the shelf. It was an awkward space that needed something. But it took me a while to come across this to fill it, and it worked well for the space. The only thing attached to the wall are the flanges. You need to purchase screws and anchors separately, but I already had both on hand. I held up the flange where I wanted it and marked the holes with a pencil. Then I used my drill to start holes in the wall, and then I put in my anchors. After that, you hold up your flange and line it up and insert the screws. This takes time and patience, but it is not that difficult.
This was a fun custom build that fills my awkward space nicely and is unique!

Awesome! I love it. I found a whole desk area built with pipes and wanted to make it for my grandson and this would make it look so much better above it! Thanks for the idea.
