Turn Dollar Store Plastic Pumpkins Into Aged Copper Halloween Decor
These DIY Aged Copper Jack-O-Lanterns could not be any easier to make and the outcome will spruce up the cheapest plastic pumpkin buckets you can find!
A few months ago, I tried this process to see How To Create Aged Copper Patina On Wood & Metal. It was such a fun and EASY process that I had to try it on plastic to see if it would work. I was so happy when it turned out just as good. Here is a video showing you the process of how easy these DIY Aged Copper Jack-O-Lanterns were to create:
The first thing I did was pour the {aff} Modern Masters Aging Solutions Green Patina into a spray bottle. I found that it was easier to apply this way. Next, I applied two coats of the {aff} Modern Masters Metal Effects Primer on the buckets and the box. I made sure the first coat was dry before I added the second coat. Once the second coat of primer was dry, I painted the buckets and the box with {aff} Modern Masters Reactive Metallic Copper paint.
Again, I made sure the first coat was dry before I applied the second coat. For the second coat, I worked in smaller sections because I needed to spray the Modern Masters Aging Solutions Green Patina over the copper paint while it was still wet.
The longest part of this process is waiting for the primer and paint to dry between layers. You have to do two coats of each to get the best outcome. More coats if it isn’t covering. I used a hair dryer to speed up the drying process between coats and it didn’t affect the outcome at all. After I sprayed the Modern Masters Aging Solutions Green Patina on the last layer of the copper paint (while it was still wet), I let the bucket sit. I didn’t use the hair dryer to speed this part of the process up because I wasn’t sure if it would ruin the aging process.
As always, turning something inexpensive into something totally different is fun. Bright orange, plastic jack-o-lanterns aren’t particularly pretty, but when they have an aged copper patina, that are turned into something I would actually use around our house for Halloween. I set up a little tablescape with these guys to show how great they would be full of snacks or treats for a party.
