It's beginning to look a lot like a rustic Christmas! It's easy to create rust to turn simple craft store wooden ornaments into farmhouse style decorations with a few simple steps.
Give the wooden ornament a coat of chalk mineral paint and allow it to dry completely. The color doesn't matter because in the end it won't show. The paint gives the patina something to grab onto.
To create rust, you will need Iron Patina Paint from the Dixie Belle Paint Company. The paint contains metal particles so it will need to be shaken really well. Paint one coat of the Iron Patina Paint and let it dry.
Once the first coat is dry, give the jar another good shake, and add a second coat of the Iron Patina Paint.
While the second coat of Iron Patina Paint is still wet, spray it with Green Patina Spray.
The process begins to happen quickly, but can take up to 6 hours to complete.
The spray will react with the paint to create a beautiful rust patina.
Embellish the rusty ornament by adding a wooden cutout using E6000 glue. Once the glue is dry, add Gilding Wax.
The Gilding Wax may be applied with your finger. It will add a nice shimmer against the rust.
Keeping with the rustic theme, add jute to hang the ornament. Fill a tree with these handmade ornaments and enjoy a rustic Christmas!
