DIY Chandelier

Ive been working on a major bathroom remodel and wanted to save some money as I got closer to the end. I had my eye in this chandelier but after weeks of buying renovation supplies I just couldn't stomach the price! I had an old fixture that I previously pulled the wood beads off to repurpose and decided to give it a new look for REALLY cheap!

The inspiration fixture

The old fixture I decided to use

First, I spray painted the fixture gold with my favorite spray paint.

Next, I cut these plastic sheets into 3x6 inch strips. I had originally bough this material to make stencils but they came in handy here! They were a little more see through than I wanted so I doubled them up.

I used this handy tool to cut faster and straighter. Totally cut my finger once too 😅

I found these fish hook earrings at my local craft store that worked perfectly for hanging the plastic strips.

The fixture I had already had these little hoops inside that I hung the earrings from. One by one it started to take shape!

I still wasn’t too sure how it was going to look but once hung it was beautiful! The plastic filtered the light so nicely.

I do a lot of plastic creations myself, have been looking for a cutter, just wondering, I think it says circut? where did you purchase (seems to be the right sz I need for my projects) Thx.

Such a smart idea! The only difference I see from the original is how much straighter it hangs. Do you think if the plastic was trimmed narrower then they would hang straight like the original?

    just a thought…. I love it!

Beautiful work. I like the light through the plastic. Can you draw on this plastic? maybe a colorful pattern or just a black geometric pattern? Does that block some of the light? Could be interesting to change out the panels for decorating.

I personally would have like to see multiple layers like the inspo piece. The first set of plastic pieces could have been adhered to the frame and successive layers added to smaller diameter hoops, perhaps embroidering hoops, and attached to the frame to create the same affect as the original. Great idea, just bad execution, in my opinion.

Bad execution? That feels harsh and unnecessary. She did a great job, especially considering she had to work around the center framework of the fixture.
