DIY Décor Using Glassware
I wanted to add a few hits of cobalt blue décor into our living room, to tie in with our blue couch. I had a vase, and also two blue glasses that I used to make a second décor item.
I have a set of cobalt blue drinking glasses and one had a hairline crack near the top. It’s barely noticeable, even when looking for it, but it was no longer safe to drink from. I also had one cobalt blue wine glass. It started out as a set of four…but what can I say, I’m clumsy!
I love the retro blue glassware, but felt it needed something natural to modernize it, so I purchased a roll of twisted sisal rope at Home Depot.
I hot glued rope around the stem of the wine glass. I’ve never done this before, but it was very easy. I cut the beginning and end of the line at a 45 or 50 degree angle, so it would blend in as well as possible.
Then I did two rows of rope on the bottom of the glass. I flipped the wine glass upside down and hot glued the glass to the base. I used an exacto knife to remove any hot glue blobs around the rope.
Then I decided to add the same rope to the bottom of the vase. I used curved facial hair scissors to trim the stray rope strands.
I added crushed stones from the dollar store to the bottom of the glass, for drainage.
I then added potting mix for succulents and planted a little succulent in the glass. I topped the soil with the same crushed stone.
I felt like it needed some sort of base. I have a set of wooden coasters that worked perfectly to sit the piece on!
And done! I tried a few different placements in the living room.
I love that it was such an easy project (even though I’m not the crafty type) and used items that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. I had everything except the rope on hand, so it was a very cost effective project.
