Anyone else having spring fever at the moment? Not the allergies – although I have that too – but the overwhelming urge to plant everything in sight. Sowing, pruning, propagating, repotting! It’s all well and good until you realize you got ahead of yourself propagating enough plants to reforest the Amazon, and you’re running out of plant pots...

Read the steps below or view the full blog post to find out how to upcycle any simple plant pot you found in your stash and turn it into a cool planter that deserves a place in your home.

All you need for this easy makeover is a plain plant pot and some raffia!

To start, apply a few coats of terracotta paint to your plant pot.

When painting, brush from side to side, not vertically, for a genuine hand-turned ceramic look.

Next, glue strands of raffia around the top.

Start weaving the raffia by grabbing 2 strands and knotting them about 1 inch down the side of the pot. Repeat with the next 2 strands and continue knotting this way all around the planter.

Once the first row of knots is done, add another row below in a diamond pattern

Continue adding rows of knots until you reach the bottom of the planter.

Finally, cut the strands short leaving about 1 inch below the planter. Fold this extra inch and apply a line of glue to hold these strands.

That’s all, now you can turn the planter over and start figuring out the crucial stuff: what plant will put in here and where will you place your planter.

How long did you make the strands? 3 times the height of the pot or more? The look is really cute!
