My husband and I wanted a light to match our handmade cedar cabinets. So we made our "over the island light", from the same cedar that was milled from our property, mason jars and old ceiling fan parts. We love it.
Everything started with a 5ft wide 4ft high stack of 8 foot long x 9 inch wide 1 inch thick cedar boards, neatly stacked in the loft of our barn, when we bought our farm. We were told they were milled from our property. We really wanted to incorporate this wood into our 1903 remodeled farmhouse.
We slowly built all of our upper cabinets from this beautiful red cedar. This is our first time building cabinets. The finish is rubbed tung oil. The island light is heavy, and required extra anchoring in the ceiling.
We used the light sockets from two old ceiling fans.
We sanded till semi smooth. We wanted to keep the rustic look, keeping some saw marks.
An application of tung oil to protect the wood let's the true color and grain just shine!
Do you see the bird?
We are currently building cedar doors between the laundry room and kitchen.
Will post when done.
