Vase Makeover Using Dollar Store Rope

Someone gave me a vase a couple of years ago. I liked the shape and size, but the vase itself was very plain Jane. I had been planning to give it a makeover ever since the day I got it…and finally got around to it!

After

This is how it looked before. I always kept it out of sight because it just didn’t have any character.

Before

I picked up silky rope at the dollar store and decided to use this for the makeover.

Rope from Dollarama

I set the vase on a lazy Susan (also from the dollar store) so I could spin it as I worked. Once I got going, not gonna lie, I kind of felt like Rumpelstiltskin spinning straw into gold. icon

Ready to go

I started at the top and hot glued the rope to the vase.  At the beginning of the rope, I left a little piece to dangle down slightly, so I could go over it on the second loop, so the starting end of the rope would be hidden underneath.

Hiding the starting point

Then I kept going around until the vase was covered.

Making progress

It is VERY important that you keep your rope lines tight together. Otherwise, you will see gaps. That’s what happened in the middle section of mine! The top and bottom were nice and tight. The middle, not so much. I pointed it out to my daughter and she said “I wouldn’t have noticed that! You’re overthinking it, mom!” So, I decided to ignore it...

And done!

Done?

Or is it done?!

After a few days, I admitted to myself that I just couldn’t ignore the gaps!  Every time I looked at it, my immediate thought was “welp, that was a failure!” I tried to think of a way to detract the eye from the gaps somehow. I thought about adding a big sunflower in the middle, but the one I had was too bulky. I thought about a natural burlap type ribbon – but the gap’y space was too wide for that. The only other idea I came up with was to paint the center! And I crossed my fingers and hoped I wasn't making a big mistake. (Wouldn't it be nice if projects had an "undo" button?) I found a little jar in my cabinet that was a similar colour.

Paint

I taped above and below the gapped center and painted it, using a small artist brush. This step took less than 5-minutes and I didn’t even remove the pampas grass!

Holding my breath...

Woohooo! I love the way that turned out! The gaps are obviously still there, but my eye doesn’t get drawn there when I look at it now. I think it really tied this project together! What do you think?

How do you connect two different ropes in the middle so they don't show much of the connection?
