How do you fix noisemakers stairs
We had that terrible ugly rental green carpet on our stairs to the basement. It was the last carpet to come out. I then painted the steps and used some anti skid paint and did the risers in another color. My problem is they made so much noise when walking up and down.
I added more screws to hold them down tighter and it is still bad.
Has anyone else had this problem and have suggestions on how to stop the noise.
Thank You
Tim Mack

Hello Tim.
Add supports on the backs of the stairs and use insulation / Caulk and then board in the back. That should help!

My husband took a 2x4 and ran it underneath the stair joist in order to support them better and screwed it to the vertical 2x4's on the wall and that significantly reduced the noise of squeaky stair noise.

Hi! The trouble with our cellar stairs isn't squeaky noises, but, the noise from walking on the wood. I have decided to put carpet treads on them to muffle the sound. The good news is they come in a variety of materials and colors, so they can blend into the current treads or look nice against them. The ones I purchased are an indoor outdoor material that has rubber padding on the back, and should be easy to clean. An alternative might be a runner. Good luck!
It sounds like you don't have squeaks but in general, foot traffic noise. Insulation is the only way to cut this down. You can try to access underneath or add a runner or treads to reduce the noise level.

It looks like an interesting fix. I have already placed 6 screws on each step. They are exposed wood and I have countersunk each one. I am thinking that I may have to replace all the steps, or redo the entire staircase

You may need to inject glue or foam underneath to prevent the wood from moving
