Sewing Box Makeover

I found this old vintage style sewing box and decided to bring it back to life by re-upholstering it using some funky coloured fabrics. I still wanted it to have that lovely vintage/retro look so went for this gorgeous and bright cube fabric. I got a lovely fabric from Prestigious Textiles that was perfect for this project.
I removed the old lining, the panels and the old upholstery and unscrewed the legs. I kept the chain as I still wanted it to open and stay open. Everything else had to go.
The legs were gorgeous but badly scratched and also a little bit dated, so I sanded them down and stained them using some wood stain. The metal bits were rusty so I cleaned them up and sanded them slightly.
I glued the panels on and reupholstered the rest of the sewing box. I decoupaged the inside of the box by placing the fabric and sealing it on using mod podge. I then put the panels back using some matching pins. To hide any imperfections around the lining, I glued on some lovely white lace ribbon.
So here it is when it was finished. I think it looks very stylish and still is very retro.

Joan LeVasseur on Nov 02, 2016I have one of these exact pieces and I recovered mine too but I didn't want to see the legs so I made an upholstered skirt for it. It has straight material on the four sides with an inverted pleat on each corner. The material I used was turquoise moire and it matches my bedroom decor. Nice job!
