Side Stepping Stained Deck
I have been working hard and trying to strip this deck for at least six months. Originally when the deck was installed I had put “deck over”on it. But for some reason it peeled and did not want to stay on the wood. After a lot of research I found out that if the wood was treated that the only way you could protect it is to use a penetrating stain rather than a paint type e deck over product. So I decided to strip it down the best I could. After many months of pressure washing with the wobble tip it was really just tearing up the wood rather than get the ugly gold deck paint off of wood. I finally just hand sanded what I could, because of the Unlevel boards it was a challenge.
After using a pressure washer and trying to strip I changed gears. As you can see some areas had a lot more of the orange paint than others. I had to figure out a way to stain it to protect it that would let this color blend in.
I literally had to take block sander on my hands and knees and remove wet loose deck over paint on it I could get off. Once it was somewhat cleaned and dry I came up with an idea. As many know me I love dimensional painting. I figured this was a good project for it to camouflage the left Over paint on there.
I literally had six different colors of stain. A red stain, black stain, white stain, gray stain dark gray, Brown etc. I used 3 brushes and started blending it in as I worked across planks.
Once I Completed the dimensional dry brushing all over with the many different colors of stain. I let it dry and I took my weed sprayer filled with Thompson’s water seal and just sprayed all over the whole deck with Thompson water seal.
Once I put the Thompson water seal on it, It darkened the stain and added to the dimensional look.
The final product was pretty amazing. I was pretty frustrated and could not remove the old deck over paint off the deck. But I literally just blending in different colors of stain and sealing it I made my own custom deck. I love it and it goes with the rest of my house theme. Let me know your thoughts and thank you

You did a lot of work to remove the "deck over". Your deck looks amazing now.
There is a problem with the deckover products. They are known to crack and peel within two years. Hard to remove. Many Hometalkers have used them and regret it and have mention their misfortunes in discussions. Many people had o replace deck boards and even complete decks. There are class action lawsuits against the manufacturers. Also notice they are not advertised anymore. You can do some online research and find more cons than pros. I have been advising Hometalkers not to use the products and to spread the word.
