I have this old shed in my backyard that I've been using as a cute focal point. It's rustically fun to look at, however I desired to have it a little more productive.

And then it hit me. What if I created a Potting Shed scenario? I've always wanted a potting bench anyway.

An old rusty rake head and couple of old wood fence planks later, this cute sign makes the shed even cuter and helped set the stage for a much more productive after!

See how it looks now!
You'll need:

  • reclaimed wood planks
  • an old rake head
  • cute garden themed stencil

I used the Potting Shed stencil from Funky Junk's Old Sign Stencils HER E
I first added a light coat of white paint over the centre part of the chippy boards where the lettering was to be painted to ensure it stood out.

Note the edges of the boards are still at their chippy best!
Next, I positioned the rake where I desired it to hang. Then figured out a plan how to stencil around it to create the Potting Shed sign.

Tip: This was the fun part! It's fun to create different looks than what the stencil originally showcases. Play around with stencils to achieve a look all your own.
I split up Potting and Shed on either side of the rake, added Tours Until Dusk inside the rake head, and repeated the flowers on either side of the rake along the bottom, in a Chocolate brown paint.

I love how the brown tone married the rusty rake head.
Next, I added a couple of old hinges to the boards to resemble it having been yanked off of something.

Tip: To make a new sign look old, use authentically old wood and rusty components.
Next, the sign was screwed to the side of the shed above a window, and loaded up with garden tools!

And then I got right to work potting those plants. How fun!
Making a Potting Shed mess has never been this whimsically fun... :)

What would you hang from this old rake sign?
