How to paint and redo a white table top kitchen table?

First clean the table well to remove any oils, etc on it. Scuff the finish with 220 grit sandpaper to give the paint some 'tooth' to stick. Apply a coat of stain-blocking primer, let it dry and then paint white. I would use a latex enamel for a good finish.

There is absolutely nothing that will give you an instant update for so little money like paint will. If you have the time and patience, be fearless--PAINT! Your plan of paint and stain sounds lovely! My guess is when it is all said and done you will love it and wonder why you even hesitated. Now, about wood-loving husbands... All men seem to love wood--even bad wood or things that look like wood but aren't really wood at all.

Clean first to remove any build up over time. If it is in good shape, scuff with steel wool. Clean with TSP or denatured alcohol. Prime. Paint with a high durability paint. I would be tempted to use RustOleum Enamel Paint.

Hi Cat,
You could give it a whiter look by rubbing it down and using a White Wax on it or using a thinned down Emulsion wall paint for a Limed look, and then wax over it, or you could, use chalk paint and then wax or you could Use, a Primer then undercoat and then top coat of Satin White for a more dense look. Best wishes

Use a good primer. I am painting oak cabinet and used this primer FIRST>https://amzn.to/3i9jaAi make sure you use a roller for cabinet so no brush marks are seen on the table
You may want to use a pore filler first to fill in the pores. Check Wood Whisperer on You Tube. He just painted old oak kitchen cabinets. The grain and pores of the oak will show if you don't fill the pores.
