You can scuff with steel wool, wipe down with alcohol, then prime and paint them. If the scratches are deep, putty them before starting the process. Adding a design to the top of them would be a great touch, if you are up for the challenge.
My thoughts were exactly what Kathy said. You could consider mod podge as well like this Hometalker did: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/furniture/use-mod-podge-to-transform-your-most-boring-piece-of-furniture-36204772

Hi! I would paint them a fun color that goes with your decor. Good luck!
But what else can I make with them?
How large and how heavy are they?
Here's a couple of ideas on how to repurpose end tables. They involve cutting off some of the width of the table, then mounting either on top of each other, or on the wall to function more like shelves.
HI, Set of three. big medium and small. They sit under each other. Largest one is 18.5 x 15" x 16" tall and medium is 15" x 13" and smallest is 10" square. Quite substantial weight.
MDF or partical board is pretty hard to repair. Find some wood filler to repair the marks. Paint to your liking
Lightly sand them then paint gray with a marbled top
There are lots of ways to dress them up. You can paint, add veneer, stick on tiles or a mosaic, layer on some wood, maybe contact paper. It depends on your tastes and goals for the pieces.
Can you just paint them that would add a splash of color to the room they were already in?
Thanks for all your input, I have decided to either stack them up and screw in place then finish them as a Plant or Whatnot stand or. Cut up the two smaller tables to make 2 x stalls or chairs for children and leave the large table so it can be used by the children for whatever they want.
