Renovating our house on a tight budget and hating the carpet that is almost as old as I am, I decided a complete overhaul was in need.
The original carpet
I began by carefully removing the dusky pink carpet and underlay we had on our top staircase with a craft knife. I then removed the underlying carpet tack strips and staples with an old dinner knife and then the back end of a hammer to remove any additional nails.
A few practice steps
After sanding down the steps, I cut giftwrap (the more mismatched the better!) into rough riser-sized strips and adhered the backs with pva glue.

Before and after
Once I established that it was the look I was going for, I painted a base and top coat onto the steps. I continued the application of giftwrap, painted a layer of pva glue over the top to stop any curling edges and used my craft knife to even out the edge and cut off any excess.
I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome, which transferred a dull stairway into a bright and airy space. It's also really good to know that changing the theme will be super easy if I want to redecorate it.
