How can I use three very ugly barn doors?

I have no idea what to do with them.

  • People often hang them and use them as doors in their home. As for the ugly part....strip off the old finish? sand and restain, or paint them.

I'm so curious, Sandra - if you find them so ugly why do you want to use them?

Depending on the size, you could possibly use them outside as a trellis type addition to your lawn for vines. Dig and set posts at the appropriate areas, add horizontal supports and attach the barn doors. If you want to improve the appearance of the doors, sand them with an orbital sander and then stain or paint to make them look as you want.

Hello. They might make a remarkable large art background framing piece on a wall that you could further layer other decorative elements on.

If they don’t suit your Decour aesthetic perhaps you can consider selling them.

Just because you find yourself the owner of barn doors that you feel are unattractive, in other words, invaluable to you, do not feel that because barn doors seem to be trendy at this point in time, that you have to spend money and energy trying to make use of them. The 'barn door look' is not appealing or attractive to everyone.

I agree with the other Hometalkers who have already suggested that you try to sell the doors on to a better home; then take the money earned from the sale, and purchase something else more to your liking for your home.

  • Hi Sandra, you can refinish them and make them more attractive if it's the finish that bothers you. Or you can leave them and use them in the garden, where a vine could grow up over them. You can replace your closet doors with them, prop them up as wall decor, screw them together to make a room dividing screen.

I would love to see photos of the barn doors! You could turn one into a table? Or if you don't want them, sell them. Someone local might want them to use as sliding barn doors in their house!
