There are so many uses for an old sweater. Have you ever thought of cutting the body of the sweater off below the armholes and using the stretch of the sweater to cover an appropriately sized box to use as an attractive storage box.

Depending on the fibre content of the sweater, (cotton, wool, nylon, etc.) and how tightly woven or how open the knit is, it may lend itself better to some projects more than others.
Here are some more ideas of how sweaters can be upcycled:
You can turn them into mittens, pillowcase, boot toppers or snug knitted hat and a beanie.
Use the sleeves to wrap a bottle of wine as a gift, cut them and sew into mittens, cut and wrap around a wreath form to make a pretty holiday or winter wreath.
You can make a pillow out of it, or a pillow cover. Or make vase coozies or if the pattern is nice, cut it up and frame it.
