DIY Faux Potted Plants

After looking around for realistic looking plants to put around my deck, patio and pool, I almost gave up. Finished faux plants are so expensive. Especially ones in ceramic containers.
Then I thought, why not make a bunch of plants myself. For a huge fraction of the cost, I made my own. About 50 plants to be exact.
Several small ones in votive sized containers, medium bucket sized containers and in huge pots I had around the house.
First visit was to the dollar tree. I found gorgeous spider plant bush stems and fern ones for a $1 a stem/bush. In addition to the cute black and hold rimmed votives, the metal containers, the stones, moss and I used my plastic bags the supplies came in.
Each bag of stones and moss goes a long way. I used 2 bags of moss, 2 1/2 bags of stones and 1/2 a bag of tiny stones for 8 plants. ( 4 small and 4 medium ).

A peak at the finished plants. I created two sizes. Four small and four medium.
Supplies
•Various Plant Stems
•Different Size Pots
•Pebbles & Black Tiny Rocks
•Floral Foam
•Spanish Moss
•Plastic or Paper Bags
•Floral Cuting Tool
•Hot Glue ( Optional )
Note: I used spider plants and votive for the small one and fern plants with a tin vase for the medium ones. For small plant
Step One
Cut floral foam to fit your small votive size container.
Step Two
Press cut foam into container. Make sure it fits snug and tight. If not, hot glue the foam to the container base.
(See photo 2a & 2b)
Step Three
Cut the stem base to desired size with a floral cutting tool. Insert into the foam.
(See photos 3a, 3b, 3c)
Step Four
Press pieces of Spanish moss into the sides of the foam and around the plant. Repeat until the floral foam is covered.
Step Five
Pour tiny black stones randomly onto the Moss. Press into place.
For medium plant
Step One
Press a piece of floral foam to fit your medium size container. Make sure it fits snug and tight. If not, hot glue the foam to the container base.
Step Two
Insert the stems into each corner of the foam.
(See medium plant photos 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d)
Step Three
Cut various plastic bags and press into the open sides around the foam. Keep adding the bags until the foam and openings are covered.
(See medium plant photos 3a, 3b, 3c)
Step Four
Press pieces of Spanish moss into the sides of the foam and around the plant. Repeat until the plastic is covered.
Step Five
Pour pebbles randomly onto the Moss. Press into place.
Step Six
Open up your fern stems and fluff them out to make the plant look full.
Note: I used 4 fern plant stem bushes for the medium sized one. You could use 5 or 6 for and even fuller plant.
Tips:
You could fill the pots with concrete or Plaster of Paris instead of foam & plastic.
While the concrete or plaster is half way through drying, pour the stones on top. If not wait till dried, then add the moss and stones.
Cost Breakdown!
$8 for 8 container bases
$4 for the 4 spider plant stems/bushels
$16 for 16 fern stems/bushels
$3 for 3 bags of Spanish moss
$1 for a package of 4 small floral foam squares
$4 for 4 medium sized floral foam squares
$3 for 3 bags polished stones
$1 for 1 bag of tiny black rocks
everything was a $1 each. Very inexpensive! You can make 8 beautiful faux potted plants for a fraction of the retail price.I go

So glad to hear. Mine have survived all last summer and this summer outside in NJ weather. I usually take indoors on severe weather, like hurricanes or huge downpours. Other than that, they stay outside for 6 months of the year.
