DIY Rainbow Pasta Mobile

The DIY Rainbow Pasta Mobile is a great way for kids to incorporate crafting, fine motor skills and basic physics into something that can be enjoyed for a long period of time after the activity itself is finished.
This fun and inexpensive craft covers a broad range of ages and is a great follow on activity from making your own rainbow pasta. You can use any pasta shape or a combination of a few different shapes- anything that you think will be engaging and fun for your little one.
Your child's age and crafting capabilities will determine how much of this craft they'll be able to do without assistance.
Younger toddlers will enjoy the sensory stimulation of the pasta shapes and colours, perhaps getting stuck into some painting, decorating and glitter fun. Older toddlers would enjoy the threading activity, or the string tying process and older kids would enjoy planning out the look of the mobile, arranging the assembly and perhaps including other decorative objects like beads. Basic elements of physics are incorporated into this craft too- the basis of symmetry and how differing weights can influence balance.

This craft is good for instilling the notion of process in younger kids. Other skills can be included in this craft too, such as tying knots or bows as well as the rich use of language and vocabulary when discussing the different descriptive elements of the pasta mobile (for instance: colours, numbers, length, prepositions, verbs and adverbs). This is a great gift idea and something that an older sibling could make for their baby brother or sister!
What you'll need:

Two sticks of relatively equal length and thickness

Tape (to cover the sticks)

Generous amount of coloured string or thread

Approx 34 pieces of dry, uncooked pasta shapes (these can be any shape you like) We have used bowtie pasta in the mobile that we made... because we love butterflies and think that these look just like butterflies dancing, when they move!
