The Herb Garden Wheel is Planted!

This week the scouts and guides came to the community garden to finish up the herb wheel garden they had built.
First I did a design of how I though the planting might work. Using Sage as the center plant for height, then using some perennial herbs near the center and annual herbs along the outside edges. Parsley and Thyme should return but the basil is not hardy here.
I had lots of herbs that I had grown to donate to the project. I brought basil, chives, oregano, lemon balm, parsley and lemon verbena. The sage and thyme were transplanted from another area of the community garden.
The children weeded out the planting sections and filled them with soil.
The center container was half filled allowing room for the roots of the Sage plant. Marigolds would be planted underneath the Sage in the area behind the curved bricks.
The children are hard at work weeding and getting soil ready. Mulch was added to the narrow pathways of the herb wheel garden.
Once the soil was in it was time to plant. The children could hardly wait! I placed the plants where they should go and we worked off the design board. Children were shown how to remove a plant from its pot and how deep to plant.
Basil, both sweet and holy, went in the front edge of this garden area.
The basil will be pinched back to encourage side shoots to grow. The children completed the planting and watered the garden well.
Tiny Marigold seedings were planted by the youngest children.
This is the completed herb garden wheel. What a great addition to the Ladner Community Garden. Thanks to all our scouts and guides and their leaders for a job well done!
As of mid July the herb garden wheel is really filling in. One of the community garden members is taking care of it. Its such a great addition to the community garden.

Linda Fitzpatrick McClellan on Jun 19, 2016That is a wonderful idea. We're getting older but still manage to have a garden summer and fall but after I saw what all the families did let's say, it might on the agenda next spring. I have lavender that is just thriving and citronella to try to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Thank you so much for sharing!!
