I began this project with a want and need to hide my cats litter box and to create additional seating as well. I started with this piece that was headed to the dump from a friend. Full sized Bureau..
This guy had seen better days. If I had needed an additional bureau I could have certainly worked some magic on this guy and brought him back from the dead. But alas, I had other plans for him.
1st I cut the bureau down to size. Eliminating the 2 top drawers and lowering the top. I also removed all hardware and removed the remaining 2 bottom drawers from their fronts.
This project came together rather quick. I secured the remaining drawer fronts to a 1/8" piece of plywood and added Magnetic Door Catches to the backside and inside of the bench. returned the hardware and slapped on a coat of urethane.
I then added a 2" foam cushion along with a burlap style fabric that matches my dining table to the top of the bench.
Some minor adjustments to the magnetic strips.
Added a cut to size sheet of shower/bathroom pvc style sheeting to the bottom for easier cleaning and to help prevent accidents from soiling the wood.
Cut an opening in the side and installed a cat door with flap to help contain any odor.
Tossed on a couple of decorative pillows and TA DA!! NOT ONCE has anyone ever mentioned a litter box smell and are always impressed with the dual function of this once Dump Destined piece.

This is my cats bed it normally sits on the floor it's just on top for size comparison. The litter tray hideaway was made by a small family business called Fur Baby Kingdom located in Adelaide South Australia, the top opens for easy access to the litter tray and is accessed by my kitten via a opening on one side and my gorgous kitten (Indiana) just loves it as do I, no mess no smell and best of all visitors don't know it hides a litter box they just think it's a small table/ seat. I looked online and found something almost identical the only problem was they only shipped within the USA which doesn't work for me as I'm in Australia, I sent a photo and measurements to Fur Baby Kingdom who after a little trial and error made me this beautiful piece of furniture for my lounge room, it turned out better and cheaper than the one online. Both myself and Indiana (my 4 month old Ragdoll kitten) just love it.

Great idea. Mark. I've learned and been inspired so much from subscribing to Hometalk that I've actually started doing small projects in my home. At 71 years old, that feels very good!

I love it. I love cats, but I hate seeing the litter box (as does my husband). This is a perfect idea. I am going to try making it and go get me a kitty.
