Upcycled Apple Picking Bucket

Last month I had the opportunity to shop a 40 mile yard sale in Virginia. I came away with a dozen new projects just waiting for a flea market flip.
My first flip from this yard sale was the hand cart that I transformed into a coffee table that I shared last week. This is my second transformation from my pile of treasures. As soon as I saw this galvanized metal bucket I knew I liked it, but I didn’t know what it was used for and why does it have a cloth bottom.
According to the vendor it was a vintage apple picking bucket. It originally had straps attached to the back that the picker would wear over his shoulders and around his back. The cloth bag would be held up by ropes on the side of the bucket and when it was full, the ropes would be disengaged and the fruit would fall gently out the bottom.
I thought my bucket would look great with flowers inside, easily changed out for the seasons. Unfortunately, the flowers sat kind of low.
To hold my flowers upright, I grabbed some old styrofoam packing and traced around the bottom of the bucket. Allowing for the thickness of the bucket, I used a serrated knife to cut the styrofoam a bit smaller than my outline.
It was then just a matter of pushing my stems into the styrofoam. Don’t you just love a super easy DIY?
To hang my bucket, I inserted some rope into the loops that would have once held the straps for picking.
I love the pop of fall color it provides on my deck.
