This project came about while I was making another tutorial. I was making a bead covered candle holder and I mixed up too much tinted Mod Podge. I quickly looked around to see what I could do with it and my eyes landed on an empty jar. Thus this became a two for the price of one tutorial. I think you can use these jars for a number of uses. My goal is over the next few days to make three more colors. I think they would brighten up my kitchen window sill with color. I discovered later that the small plastic cup of extra tinted Mod Podge would fit into a ziplock bag and would keep for days but I still am happy with my new jar.

I started with one of these pint jars... You can find them everywhere. Amazon and Walmart are usually the best priced stores for these smooth sided jars.

Next, I mixed Mod Podge and Dylusions Spray in a plastic cup. Most craft stores sell Dylusions Spray and you can buy them in packs of two different colors. A package of two usually costs $10 or $6 if you have a 40% coupon.

This picture shows Mod Podge Matte in the background - I used Hard Coat for this particular jar.

I mixed it with a popsicle stick. I found working with a plastic cup is better than a cardboard/paper cup. The cardboard will absorb the Dylusions Spray and you waste some of that yummy color.

I swirled it around and around until the inside looked evenly and well coated. In this picture, I am almost done. There is just one tiny spot that needs to be coated.

Because my jar had flat sides, I would lay it down and after about 5 minutes, I would roll it to the next side. When I felt it was evenly coated, I inverted it on two chopsticks and let the excess drain out. Not to waste any, I had it drip down onto wax paper and easily could pour it into a storage container with a lid.

Do not get attached to this color, it won't end up looking like this...

It will take a long time to dry. My jar took two full days. This is at the end of day one.

Still not dry. Sometime during day two. I moved it to a sunny window sill and that sped up the process tremendously.

It ended up quite different from where it started. I knew when the milky Mod Podge dried it was going to be more of a tinted, rather than painted jar. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and found it interesting. Have you ever made a project and ended up with a side project that was just as fun or better than the original project?

Here is the completely dry jar next to the bead candleholder that started it all.

Since I had the jar, Dylusions Spray and Mod Podge, this project didn't cost me any additional money. If I were to try to break down the cost for one jar... The jars at my Walmart are $7.86 for 12, so one jar would be around 66 cents and the Mod Podge and Dylusions Spray would come to pretty minimal amounts. (1/2 of a small plastic cup of Mod Podge and two pumps of spray for the Dylusions.) I would guess if you broke down the cost it would be around a dollar per jar in total. So, all in all, a very budget friendly jar.

I decided to do three more colors. This is mid dry for the middle and right jars. I don't know what is going on with purple but I am not sure I am going to end up with a purple jar in the end.

What do you think? Will the middle one end up purple or pink? Only time will tell. Believe it or not, the purple one turned mainly clear. I had been playing around video taping the process and it reminded me that the purple spray hadn't worked so I poured in the color. Even though I stirred it and it looked purple, whatever truly makes it purple was sitting in the bottom of the bottle. I shook up the bottle and now it sprays. I am going to try to put another layer of color on these jars and see what happens.

Can you put liquid inside the jar or dry baking products - or would they only be usable for decor?
