Milk Painted Cabinet for a Whole New Look!
I found this cupboard/cabinet at our local charity shop and I loved the glass doors, but the varnished wood looked a little dated and boring, so I whisked it home for a makeover to give it a new lease of life.
I gave the whole piece a rough sanding just to give the paint a little "tooth" to grip onto. A little bit of prep can save disappointment at the end of your project.
I mixed up some Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in the colour Eulalie's Sky to paint the inside of the entire cupboard. I had removed the cupboard doors and taped the edges of the glass so I didn't splatter paint on the glass.
Milk Paint is easy to mix up in a 1:1 ratio - one part milk paint powder to one part water. For the inside of the cupboard I probably used approx. a cup of powder to a cup of water. I painted two coats.
I mixed up some Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in the colour, Linen (approx a cup powder to a cup of water), and painted the outside of the cupboard in the Linen colour. I then stencilled the front panels of the two doors using one of the Funky Junk Old Sign Stencils. It came with a couple of options for the place name and also an option for the coffee beans vs the coffee cup. Very cute I thought.
Then I sanded the entire piece, distressing the edges for an aged, worn look. After wiping down, my helpful assistant helped to seal the entire piece using a Tough Coat Wipe-on polyurethane. It is a lovely finish that doesn't yellow over time or with sunlight.
And here's the finished look. I added some sneaky LED lights in the top shelves of the cupboard just for the photos.
Another "after pic" with the door open.
I popped one of my stencilled antique crates into the cupboard for this pic.
