Hi there!
I would have loved to know some things about tools and supplies when I started crafting and woodworking but I had close to no one to help me.
I thought I could share my secret tools and supplies with you fellows Hometalkers! Maybe you'd like to make a project, but you don't know what supplies or tool to use...?
These 2 posts are for you (check link below for 2/2 My DIYer Stash (Tools)). My Xmas gift for you! :)
One thing I love when I create something is to have everything on hand. Here's a list of supplies that I use almost on a daily basis.
Over the time, I tried many products, many brands and I adopt some, stop using others...
The following items are always available in my girl's cave. If one is missing, I go buy it on the spot. I might forget to buy milk or bread, but never screws or glue!
ACRYLIC PAINT : Maybe you don't know it, but those little tubes can be used on so much more than canvas! I see a lot of projects made with Unicorn spit, but I know I can do the same with acrylic paint, and so much more!
Liquitex Basics Acrylic Paint Tube 24 to 48-Piece Set. I always have a set of small tubes of different colors, and big tubes of white, black, silver, gold and bronze.
Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint + Primer.
One thing I love about this product, is that you can find it in spray paint, but also in liquid paint, and in a large variety of colors and finishes. It is sometimes very helpful to use both spay and liquid paint on a same project.
I always have :
- White
- Black
- Silver
- And some other colors that fits my décor or my art.
A good varnish is certainly a MUST. If you don't want something glossy, chose another one... Most of the time, when I want to varnish a piece, I also want it to shine!
Krylon crystal clear triple thick glaze.
This is truly a MUST! It offers a perfect finish, very shiny and it dries very very fast! It looks almost like epoxy... Love it!
Square head screws # 8.
I find that this diameter (# 8) is a one size fits all. It is easier to have the right tools on hand when always using the same type of screws.
I have two electric drills. One with a drill of 1/8" to make holes, and one with a bit # 8 to screw.
Always have :
- Square head screws # 8 -- 1/2"
- Square head screws # 8 -- 3/4"
- Square head screws # 8 -- 1"
- Square head screws # 8 -- 1 1/2"
- Square head screws # 8 -- 2"
Sanding paper
- 40 grit (very rough)
- 80 grit
- 120 grit
- 200 grit (smooth)
My sweet epoxy ! :) I have tried several brands, some even much more expensive, but this is the ONE! I did a lot of projects with it (art, furniture, counter, etc.) and now, I have to have it in my stash!
Wood! I never throw away a piece of wood. At the risk of sounding like Gollum in LOTR, they are my precious! :) When I buy wood for a project, I always buy a little bit more than what I need to fill my stash. Love to be able to start a project on the spot when an idea strikes!
GLUE : I find it very important to have different glue for different projects. Using the right one can make a big difference between a fail and a success.
Gorilla glue (the original brown one) : this one expends a lot once dried... It is perfect for uneven surfaces and it is extremely strong!
Lepage cement contact : very useful! I use it a lot for a lot of things! I love the little brush in the cover.
Hot glue sticks : Of course!!! :)
Wood glue : if you do a lot of woodworking, you definitely need this one!
Cyanoacrylate glue : the one we all call Krazy glue. Very helpful for quick fix, but I prefer by far the other glues for long lasting projects.
Stain : I prefer by far Saman stains to any other brand. It is liquid, you can mix the colors (they have a LOT!), easy to apply and fast to dry. It's kind of self-leveling so there's no need to be a pro... Always perfect! Always have : black, white and American Walnut.
Minwax Paste finishing paste : natural and Special dark.
Frogtape (or less expensive... Choose your battles!).
Sharpie : have a ton! Regular, metallic, Oil paint, etc.
Enjoyed the project?

Here in Canada, it seams that they just sell square head screw.
I should have add stain, wax and sharpie... I'll add it tomorrow.
Thanks for all William!
